Jeff, Sarah, Jen, and Kate ate pizza in a ping-pong pizza restaurant last night night, mere hours after Sasha and Malia Obama stopped in for some cheese pizzas. This bodes very well for the journey ahead.
Thought you might like to know about this video installation/performance that took place on and from a train a few years ago by two dynamic artists Mary Ellen Strom and Ann Carlson. Hope you enjoy the site. The work is called “Geyserland”.
It’s really starting people!!!! Today, Kate, Jenn, and Sarah meet me in DC. All day long, we’ll be making a Hit Book themed “Cross Country” at Transformer. Hit Book is a zine project by Hit Factorie in Bklyn in which we make one book in one day. We’ll distribute these zines tonight at Comet - a ping pong pizza restaurant and bar - and along our travels. Choo choo!
In conjunction with my residency at Transformer in Washington DC, I’ll be doing some tests of programs we hope to do on the Amtrak line - except I’ll be on the DC Metro. With such a short opportunity for engagement, i think my projects will be more performative and less participatory. Without time to have people do a full short story reading and response, I’ve selected some poems written by DC authors, or about sites in DC. I’m also feeling a cosmic vibe and will probably read a little tarot and try to start a chant. Side note - I’m posting this as i sit in the Busboys and Poets Cafe in Columbia Heights in DC - a space dedicated for people to come together and discuss issues of social justice.
In the 16th, 17th, and 18th century when travel took long periods, a Charette referred to long carriage rides in which politicians and policy makers would be sequestered together in order to collaborate in solving a set problem over the duration of their journey. This origin is most similar to the current usage of the word in the (USA) design world.
Welcome. Empire Builder is a cross-country, multi-day, artist adventure on the Amtrak line of the same name. We will be converging on the train from cities around the country to meet, conspire, create, and interact while riding the rails to attend the Open Engagement Conference in Portland, OR on May 14th.
Please follow along as we embark on this adventure. And play cards.
